If you’re dreaming of a candid, documentary-style couples session that feels adventurous, playful, and completely you… this couples canoe photoshoot is it.
Cassandra and Colin’s golden hour canoe session at Porteau Cove, just past Squamish, was everything I love about documentary photography – natural movement, real laughter, and the freedom to experiment without pressure.

From the very beginning, this shoot was about bringing a vision to life in the most authentic way possible.
Cassandra and Colin chose the canoe theme themselves. They picked up the canoe, loaded it up, and met me at Porteau Cove ready to fully lean into the experience. That kind of enthusiasm changes everything. When couples are excited and open, it allows space for truly candid, documentary moments to unfold naturally.
Golden hour along the Sea to Sky corridor is unreal. The light wraps around the mountains, reflects off the water, and creates the dreamiest glow. It’s the perfect setting for documentary-style photography because it enhances what’s already happening instead of overpowering it. No stiff poses. No forced smiles. Just two people in love, floating on the water, completely present with each other.
One of my favourite parts of this session? We treated it like creative play.
Yes, I guided them. Yes, I gave direction. But the goal wasn’t perfection – it was experience.
Cassandra and Colin made balancing in the canoe look effortless. They shifted positions, turned toward each other, leaned back, moved closer, and even stood up when I asked (which is not easy in a canoe!). They trusted the process completely.
Some ideas, I wasn’t even sure would work. But we tried them anyway.
When you let go of rigid expectations and allow room for experimentation, you capture the in-between moments:
These are the images that feel alive. The ones that don’t look posed – they look remembered.

Documentary-style sessions are perfect for couples who:
Cassandra and Colin embodied all of this. They were confident, playful, and completely open to experimentation. Because of that, we were able to create images that feel honest and immersive – like stepping back into that golden hour evening on the water.
If you’re looking for a creative, documentary-style photographer in Vancouver to make your vision come to life – whether it’s a canoe, a mountaintop, or something totally unique – let’s experiment. Let’s create something that feels like you.
Here’s what Cassandra and Colin had to say about working with me:
“I received a recommendation from a friend who said that Amanda captures nature scenery beautifully, and when I first saw her work I thought her photos were absolutely stunning.
Before the shoot, we were worried about not knowing how to pose and about looking awkward or stiff. Also, as someone who’s never done a photoshoot, it’s hard to come up with ideas that would look good being captured – I liked that Amanda had a variety of these and ideas she wanted to do.
During the session, Amanda was super fun and chill to be around. She made us both feel comfortable. We are super happy with the photos we received. They are stunning!
I had a really great experience with Amanda. If she’s available, she’ll do a fantastic job!”
