It looks like we’re in for a snowy season here in BC—which means it’s time to embrace the magic of winter with a snow photoshoot!
Snow sessions are such a fun and unique way to capture memories, but they do come with a few extra challenges. If you’re not properly prepared, it can quickly go from magical to cold and soggy. So, here are my top tips to help you get the most out of your snowy photo session and truly enjoy the experience!
The number one rule for a successful snow photoshoot? Stay warm! While you probably don’t want to wear full snow gear, layering is key. Double up on socks, wear leggings under your pants, and pile on the cozy tops. Add a cute winter coat, hat, or scarf—functional and photogenic!
I keep you moving throughout the session, which definitely helps warm you up, but it’s best to come prepared. And hey—if you get too warm, you can always remove a layer or two.
Even with all the layers, snow can still find its way in. Bring a change of clothes for afterward so you can ride home comfortably. During our shoot, you might be throwing snow in the air, having a snowball fight, building a snowman, or even making snow angels—so you’ll want to be ready for some winter fun!
When it comes to choosing a location for your snow photoshoot, pick somewhere that shows off the snow. Open areas often hold snow better than dense forests, where tree coverage can block snowfall from settling on the ground. Bonus if the spot has a beautiful view! Just make sure both you and your photographer can safely access the location—no getting stuck in the snow, please.
If you want to do something more unique than a typical posed shoot, consider building your session around a snow-based activity. Whether it’s snowshoeing, sledding, or a snowy hike, activities bring energy and natural interaction to your photos. Plus, it’s way more fun!
Trust me—you’ll thank yourself for this one. A warm drink waiting for you in the car (or a pit stop at Starbucks on the way home) is the perfect cozy reward after a snowy shoot.
