This campfire engagement shoot was part of my couples creative series, and it honestly could not have been more perfect. We headed down Chilliwack Lake Road in Chilliwack, nestled in the heart of the Fraser Valley. It was the perfect day of gorgeous weather, mountain views, and total privacy – a recipe for success.
A campfire engagement shoot isn’t just about aesthetic photos (although yes, the riverside mountain views were unreal). It’s about creating an experience.
We set up along the river with the most beautiful mountain backdrop. I brought a blanket; they brought the firewood and all the ingredients for s’mores. As soon as we lit the fire, the mood shifted – the nerves melted, the laughter started, and the magic happened naturally.
This is exactly why I believe so deeply in activity-based photography.
When couples have something to do, they stop thinking about how they look. They lean into the moment instead of posing for it. They move closer without being told to. They laugh because something is actually funny.
Instead of standing still and wondering what to do with your hands, you’re:
That’s why I love incorporating experiences like this into my creative shoot series. It allows couples to relax, connect, and create memories while I document it all in a natural, documentary way.
As a candid wedding photographer in Vancouver, I approach engagement sessions the same way I approach wedding days: I’m there to observe, guide gently, and document what naturally unfolds. The less staged it feels, the more timeless it becomes.
From the very beginning, these two were giggly and completely wrapped up in each other. You could tell they were a little nervous at first – which is so normal – but within minutes of roasting marshmallows and teasing each other about who was burning theirs, they forgot the camera was there.
And here’s the best part: this was Harvey’s first time ever having a s’more.
Where they’re from, camping just wasn’t part of growing up. So getting to witness and photograph that experience – the first bite, the surprise at how messy it was, the laughter – made the session feel even more meaningful. It wasn’t just photos. It was a memory.
This is what candid couples photography is about for me. It’s documenting real experiences, not manufacturing moments.
This Campfire Engagement Shoot in Chilliwack, BC was the perfect mix of romance, adventure, and genuine connection. A riverside fire, mountain views, first-time s’mores, and two people completely smitten with each other – it doesn’t get much better than that.
If you’re dreaming of engagement photos that feel more like a date night than a photoshoot, candid couples photography and activity-based photography might be exactly what you’re looking for.
