There is something so undeniably romantic about a downtown Vancouver elopement in the winter. Nikki and Chris’ day was the perfect blend of editorial elegance and candid, joy-filled moments – exactly what timeless photography is all about.

We began their portraits at The Morrissey Pub, who were so incredibly generous in allowing us to use their space. Nikki and Chris wanted a few editorial-inspired images to start – something a little moodier, refined, and city-chic to reflect their downtown Vancouver elopement vibe.
The Morrissey gave us the most beautiful backdrop: rich tones, cozy textures, and that classic gastropub ambiance that feels effortlessly cool in the wintertime. It was the perfect contrast to the cold city streets outside.
We chose to start at The Morrissey because we were going to order some cocktails and we knew that this would help Chris to feel a little bit more comfortable in front of the camera. Nikki felt totally comfortable, but we knew that Chris would be a little bit more nervous, which is also why I leaned more into prompting during this part with a mix of editorial style photos.
It is so common to feel nervous about getting in front of the camera, especially during an intimate elopement where everything feels heightened and personal. I used intentional prompting, subtle movement, and playful direction to bring out genuine laughs. We focused the session more on interaction until I built trust and comfortability with Chris.

After we got comfortable together in the Morrissey, we took an Uber during which we just talked about everything from life to the wedding to plans after the wedding, which is truly one of my favorite parts about photographing couples is getting to know them on a more personal level during a photo shoot.
Niki and Chris had previously seen an editorial Vancouver Public Library photoshoot, and they loved the architecture and composition of the photos, so they wanted to also get some shots here at their downtown Vancouver elopement as well.
Even though it was starting to get a little bit dark, I pulled out my flash, and this made for some of my favourite photos that I have ever taken at the library. I’m honestly grateful that I could play around with the flash and give them some super unique photos.
For Nikki and Chris, choosing a downtown Vancouver elopement allowed them to celebrate in a way that felt true to who they are. As they love to try different bars and speak-easy’s, downtown Vancouver was the obvious choice for their elopement photos as there are a plethora of options to choose from. And leaning into candid photography ensured that even the nervous energy turned into authentic, laughter-filled memories.
Nikki and Chris’ winter elopement was intimate, stylish, emotional, and genuinely fun. I left feeling so grateful – not just to photograph them, but to share space, stories, and conversation on such a significant day.
If you’re dreaming of a downtown Vancouver elopement that blends editorial city vibes with candid, natural moments – winter might just be the most underrated season to do it. If you’re looking for a candid and timeless photographer in Vancouver, I would love to help plan something amazing.
