I’ve been counting the days to share this story with you, sitting on my hands (figuratively, of course!) to keep from spilling the details too soon. This Mabel Lake elopement isn’t just any elopement—it’s the wedding of my sister and my new brother-in-law, and it holds a special place in my heart.
When Becca and Mitchell got engaged in May 2024, they decided to skip the long engagement and elope just a few months later. They wanted something intimate, heartfelt, and entirely their own. And let me tell you, they absolutely nailed it.
Their elopement took place in Mabel Lake at our uncle’s cabin, near Vernon. If you’ve never been, picture this: towering trees, a calm lake that stretches to the horizon, and a cozy cabin nestled in nature’s embrace. It’s the kind of place that feels like home even if you’re just visiting. It was the perfect backdrop for their love story.
The wedding was a small, family-only affair—just parents, siblings, and the couple. We turned the elopement weekend at Mabel Lake into a mini getaway, packing up cars and making the five-hour drive to the cabin. The first night was a whirlwind of hanging out, decorating, and preparing for the big day. There was laughter, excitement, and a shared feeling of, This is going to be special.
Wedding day started with coffee, muffins, and random breakfast snacks shared around the table. There was no rush, just a slow and peaceful morning full of conversation and anticipation. When it was time to get ready, the DIY magic began. Becca did her own makeup, Mitchell kept it classic, and the rest of us pitched in where we could.
This wasn’t a wedding with extravagant décor or a big vendor list. They kept things simple, personal, and budget-friendly—proof that you don’t need a massive budget to create something beautiful.
As the family photographer (and a very proud sister), I had the unique honour of capturing everything. We started with some portraits: Becca and the girls, Mitchell with his brother and dad, and then a first look on the cabin’s gorgeous staircase. Watching Becca and Mitchell see each other for the first time that day was pure magic. Their faces lit up, and I knew this moment would stay with them forever.
The ceremony was held outside, surrounded by trees and the people who mean the most to them. It was emotional, heartfelt, and deeply personal. I don’t think there was a single dry eye as they exchanged vows and talked about their love. It’s one of the most beautiful ceremonies I’ve ever witnessed—and been a part of.
Afterward, I whisked them away to the lake and forest for portraits. The light, the setting, and their genuine joy made these some of the most stunning images I’ve ever captured. Knowing I could document these moments for my sister and her husband made it all the more special.
The day ended with a cozy charcuterie spread back at the cabin, more laughs, and what I thought would be a quiet evening. But then came the part I’ll never forget: the boat ride.
We thought it’d be fun to take the boat out for some unique photo opportunities. It was all smooth sailing until, well, it wasn’t. Five minutes in, the boat tipped. One moment we were laughing; the next, we were all in the lake—including me, clutching my camera.
That moment marked the end of my very first camera, the one I started my photography business with four years ago. While it was heartbreaking in the moment, looking back, I can’t think of a more poetic way for that camera to go out. It captured every bit of magic from the day before its dramatic farewell.
This wedding wasn’t just a celebration of love; it was a reminder of what truly matters—family, connection, and shared experiences. And now, I’m thrilled to share that it’s been published in Confetti Wed magazine! You can find the link in my story if you’d like to see more
Becca and Mitchell, thank you for letting me be a part of your incredible day. I’ll treasure these memories forever, waterlogged camera and all.
