Daniil reached out to me because he wanted help planning a surprise proposal at Whytecliff Park for Emily. He was looking for somewhere scenic that really captured Vancouver’s natural landscape while still being close enough to downtown Vancouver. The two of them were spending the weekend in the city and had plans for a nice dinner, so he wanted a location that felt special but wasn’t too far away.
After chatting through email, we decided that a Whytecliff Park proposal would be the perfect fit. Whytecliff Park is one of the most beautiful spots near Vancouver, with stunning coastal views and scenery that truly represents the natural beauty of the West Coast.
Danelle reached out not too far in advance, but luckily I was available for his date and we were able to plan everything through email. Together we figured out the best plan to keep the proposal a complete surprise.
For the proposal, Daniil chose the option where I would hide in plain sight as a tourist, pretending to take photos of the scenery. This approach works really well for surprise proposals because it allows the moment to unfold naturally without raising suspicion.
Before the proposal, Danelle told me he would give me a signal right before getting down on one knee so I would be ready to capture the moment.
Emily had absolutely no idea what was about to happen. As soon as Danelle got down on one knee, her reaction was so fun to witness. She was incredibly excited, giddy, and completely surprised. Moments like this are why I love candid photography so much – the emotions are completely real and impossible to recreate.
After the proposal, there was another surprise waiting for Emily. Her parents were actually there as well, and they came over to celebrate with them. We took a few photos together with her parents before continuing to explore the park for a full engagement photo session.
Whytecliff Park is such a beautiful place for engagement photos. The coastal scenery, ocean views, and rocky shoreline make it an incredible setting for candid photography and natural moments.
As we walked around the park, I got to know Daniil and Emily a little better. They were such a silly, goofy couple, and it was so fun matching their energy during the session. Right away they told me they had no idea what to do in photos, which is something I hear from couples all the time.
As a Vancouver photographer and Fraser Valley wedding photographer, guiding couples through photos in a relaxed and natural way is a big part of my approach. I helped guide them through a few prompts so they could simply enjoy being together instead of worrying about posing.
It was such a fun experience getting to spend this huge moment with them and document such an exciting milestone in their relationship.
